On liquid crystal displays (LCDs), there are three kinds of screens; active matrix being one of them. (The other two are passive-matrix and dual-matrix).

Active-matrix screens are crisper than passive-matrix screens, albeit at a higher price, and moving the mouse or cursor on them won't make them "disappear", as can happen on passive-matrix screens.

In the 1990s, this was a relatively big deal. By the early 21st century, however, a huge percentage -- if not the entirety -- of new LCDs were active-matrix.
