Template:App Apple Maps, or simply Maps, is a navigation utility for iOS and its derivatives, such as iPadOS and watchOS.
History
Apple Maps was first unveiled at the 2012 Worldwide Developers Conference as a major part of iOS 6, replacing Google Maps, which had been included with iPhones since the first iPhone OS. Promoted features included turn-by-turn navigation, 3D maps, flyovers, and Siri support.[1][2]
However, criticism of the bugs in early versions of Apple Maps led to a public apology by CEO Tim Cook and the departure of Scott Forstall, senior vice president of iOS, in October 2012. [3][4] After development was taken over by Eddy Cue, he stated that the experience led Apple to implement "significant changes to all of our development processes", starting with public betas of new versions of iOS and OS X to catch such issues.[5]
Anonymized mobility data from Apple Maps.
A newly redesigned version with more precision detail, pedestrian data, and other features was released on January 30, 2020 for users in the United States.[6] On April 14, 2020, Apple provided a tool to access anonymized navigation data from Apple Maps to help track COVID-19 mobility trends.[7]
