Apple USB Power Adapters are marketed by Apple, each featuring a USB-A port that is rated for different wattage levels, depending on the power requirements of the mobile device.[1]

Product history

The first iPhone shipped on June 29, 2007 with the pre-existing iPod USB Power Adapter.[2] The iPhone 3G shipped on July 11, 2008 with the first ultracompact 5-watt USB Power Adapter.[3] The first iPad shipped on April 3, 2010 with a more powerful 10-watt adapter, using the larger form factor of the previous iPod USB adapter, along with a 6-foot Power Adapter Extension Cable.[4]

Using a higher-rated charger than the power requirements of the device is fine, but vice-versa is not recommended.[1]

The larger adapters (10W and above) have a removable "duckhead" that can be switched for use with different types of power connectors.

Counterfeit adapters

Apple USB Power Adapters are known to be frequently counterfeited. Apple offered a special program in which customers could trade in a counterfeit adapter for a genuine Apple version for the special price of US$10 from August 6 to October 18, 2013 at an Apple retail store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.[6]
