A file manager or file browser is a computer program that provides a user interface to work with file systems. The most common operations performed on files or groups of files are: create, open, list, edit, view, print, play, rename, move, copy, delete, search/find, and modify file attributes, properties and file permissions. Files are typically displayed in a hierarchy. Some file managers contain features inspired by web browsers, including forward and back navigational buttons.

History

The earlist file managers, such as DOS, were text or command-line based. The first graphical file manager was developed for the Apple Lisa and became the basis of the Macintosh Finder, which was released in 1984 and remains in use today for macOS. The equivalent for iOS and iPadOS is the Files app.
