A partition is a logical section of a drive. Each partition can has its own file system. Unix tends to treat partitions as if they were separate physical entities.[1]
Partition schemes[]
For drives to be formatted in HFS Plus (Mac OS Extended), Apple's own Disk Utility supports the following partition schemes:
- Apple Partition Map (APM): Supports booting by 68k and PowerPC-based Macs.
- GUID Partition Table (GPT): Supports booting by Macs with Intel processors or Apple Silicon. Also supported by recent versions of Microsoft Windows
For drives to be used by Windows (e.g. Boot Camp):
- Master boot record (MBR): Compatible with most versions of MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows.
The Apple File System, which superseded HFS Plus, favors creating logical containers and volumes instead of partitions.[2]
