handyPrint (formerly AirPrint Activator) is a 64-bit macOS utility that was developed by Netputing to allow printers that otherwise do not support the AirPrint protocol to be connected to wirelessly by using the Wi-Fi connection of a host Mac. Though released as freeware, a donation is requested.[1]
History
- AirPrint Activator v1.0 was first developed in 2010 as beta versions of Mac OS X 10.6.5 (Snow Leopard) were testing the AirPrint protocol on Macs. However, even though the final public release from Apple did not include AirPrint, Netputing found the necessary libraries in iTunes 10.1 to support AirPrint in Mac OS X 10.6.5 and later without relying on components from the beta version. A device running iOS 4.2 or later was required for mobile printing over AirPrint. The beta versions of Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) were not supported by version 1.x.
- AirPrint Activator v2.0 added support for Intel processors and Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) in 2011.[2]
- handyPrint v4.0 introduced the ability to select default printer media type in late 2012, along with the change of name, likely due to trademark issues.
- handyPrint v5.0 was introduced on September 9, 2013 with support for OS X 10.9 (Mavericks). v5.5.0 is the final version, released on August 12, 2018.[3]
