The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world's largest technical professional society, founded in the United States.[1]

Description

The American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) was founded in 1884 by a small group of practitioners of the new electrical engineering discipline. On January 1, 1963, the AIEE merged with its rival, the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE), to form the modern IEEE. As of 2020, the institute has more than 395,000 members from 160 countries.[2]

The IEEE sponsors technical conferences, symposia and local meetings worldwide, publishes nearly 25% of the world's technical papers in electrical, electronics and computer engineering and computer science, provides educational programs for its members and promotes standardization. Areas covered include aerospace, computers and communications, biomedical technology, electric power and consumer electronics.[1]
