Not to be confused with a disk image.

In computing, an image is generated by data that represents the visual scene. A digital image is typically composed of pixels arranged in a rectangular array with a defined height and width. Each pixel may consist of one or more bits of information, representing the brightness of the image at that point and possibly including color information encoded as RGB triples.

Image sources

Digital images are usually recorded (or "digitized") from the real world via a digital camera, frame grabber, scanner, or they may be digitally generated by a computer (e.g. by 3-D rendering software).[1]
