The MessagePad 100 was a touchscreen mobile device that was released by Apple Computer as part of its MessagePad tablet computer line.
Release
The MessagePad 100 began shipping on March 4, 1994, replacing the original with a lower price of US$499. It was superseded by the MessagePad 110 and was discontinued in August 1995.[1]
Features
The MessagePad 100 featured a 20 MHz ARM 610 processor with 640 KB of static RAM. 482 KB of RAM was used by Newton OS, depending on the version, leaving 158 KB available for user data. Storage space could be expanded through the PCMCIA Type II slot. The monochrome LCD screen displayed 336 x 240 pixels. A 9600 baud fax modem was optional.[1]
System updates
The MessagePad 100 is virtually identical to the original MessagePad, except that it shipped with Newton OS 1.2, while the original is limited to version 1.1.1.[1] On January 30, 1995, Apple made a software update to Newton OS 1.3 available to users of the MessagePad 100 or 110.[2]
Variants
Sharp Corporation licensed and produced a variant of the original MessagePad as the Sharp Expert Pad PI-7100.[3]
