Not to be confused with PCs, based on personal microcomputers from IBM.

A microcomputer is a computer based on a microprocessor, allowing for it to be small and inexpensive enough for use in a home or small office. This would be in contrast with a larger minicomputer or mainframe.[1]

History

The SIM4-01 was the first 4-bit micro computer set, which was released in kit form by Intel in 1971.[2] The Altair 8800 was introduced by MITS in January 1975 as the world's first user-customizable 8-bit microcomputer kit.[3][4] The Apple II was released by Apple Computer in June 1977 and is considered to be the first widely successful microcomputer.[5]
