Minecraft key art
Minecraft is a popular sandbox game developed by Mojang Studios, a subsidiary of Xbox Game Studios. It is a survival and block building game created by Markus "Notch" Persson, with development starting in 2009. It is available on iOS and iPadOS via Apple's App Store.
Editions
Java Edition
The Java edition is the original version of Minecraft.
Minecraft: Java Edition, formerly referred to as "PC Edition", is the original version of Minecraft, which entered public beta on May 17, 2009 and was formally released as version 1.0 on November 18, 2011. It can be played on macOS and Windows through supported web browsers that support Java.[1]
Bedrock edition icon
Bedrock Edition
The Bedrock Edition (just Minecraft[note 1] on most platforms and in-game) is a multi-platform version of Minecraft developed by Mojang Studios and Xbox Game Studios. Unlike Java Edition, which runs on the titular coding system, Bedrock Edition runs on C++.[2]
Minecraft Education
Minecraft Education (formerly Minecraft: Education Edition) is an educational edition of Minecraft specifically designed for classroom use. The full game was released on November 1, 2016. There was a beta test between June 9 and November 1, 2016. On August 20, 2018, Mojang Studios announced that it would bring Minecraft Education to iPad in Autumn 2018.[3] Microsoft stated that licensed users would be able to play starting in September.[4] It was released to the App Store on September 6, 2018.
Discontinued
Apple TV Edition
The Apple TV edition was discontinued in September 2018.
Minecraft: Apple TV Edition was the version for Apple TV, introduced in October 2016 and officially released on December 19, 2016.[5] It was the last Bedrock Edition to have an "Edition" subtitle and was discontinued and removed from the Apple TV Store on September 24, 2018.[6]
Legacy Console Edition
The Console Edition is developed by 4J Studios and SkyBox Labs.
Minecraft: Legacy Console Edition was the version for console platforms including the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, and formerly PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U. It was developed by 4J Studios and SkyBox Labs, and is also available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S via backward compatibility. It was replaced by the Bedrock Edition on consoles.
