RSS (an abbreviation of Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary) is a protocol that permits news feeds. It's like a news ticker for the web. The file extension for a RSS feed is .xml - whilst the .xml can be 'read' with a web browser, it will not pick up the news feeds for you, and will look like gibberish. Several newspapers and television stations have RSS news feeds available on their websites, often indicated by an orange "RSS" or "XML" icon.
Usage
To use RSS, you first need to configure a "News Reader" program, suc as Apple's Safari web browser, which supports RSS since version 1.3.
Then you need to follow your News Reader's instructions for how to add a feed - look for small orange buttons on a webpage to see if they have an RSS/atom feed available.
RSS and news aggregators
There are also numerous "News Reader" programs which support RSS. These include:
- NetNewsWire
- NewsLife by ThinkMac
- NewsFire
- Shrook by Utsire
