A Read Me document is a piece of electronic assistive documentation which is provided just before a piece of software is released. Often, such documentation is released too late to be printed as part of the manual, and is released electronically instead.
Under classic Mac OS, Read Me documents were mainly read-only SimpleText or TeachText documents (ttro files). Other formats included DOCMaker, Common Ground CG Viewer formats, as well as (occasionally) editable SimpleText files. They also may appear as part of the application's built-in help feature.
Under Mac OS X, they appear predominantly as RTF or RTFD files (readable by TextEdit) or PDF files which are included as part of the installation procedure.
