System Update 3.0 is an extension-based patch released Apple Computer in May 1994 for all versions of System 7.1.x. The update file can be placed loose in the System Folder. Its functions were merged into System 7.5, making it unnecessary for that version of the system software.^[1]

Improvements

Aside from incorporating all improvements and ehancements from Hardware System Update 1.0 and 2.0.1, the update fixed odd crashes, especially a crash that would occur if more than 20 disks appeared on the Desktop.

Other included updates:

• About This Macintosh: An error which made the memory bar too long (and actually stretched it out of the window) was fixed.
• Control panels: New and debugged versions of the Easy Access, Memory, Screen and Sound control panels were made available. All control panels related to the PowerBook were fixed and upgraded as well.
• Memory: Cases where the System seems to use an incessantly increasing amount of memory as the computing day drags on were fixed.
• Open and Save dialog boxes: 16x16 small icons, with the actual (customised) icon (in colour if your Mac supports it), now appear instead of the original, generic application / document / folder / suitcase icons in list views in the Finder. Some applications' dialog boxes also received an improvement where the name section was expanded, to show more of the document's name.
• Sound control panel: This control panel, on AV Macintosh computers, now remembers the alert signal you last set.
• Startup: The blinking question-mark icon at startup was rectified.
• System Enablers: Most Enablers received an update.
• TeachText: System Update 3.0 officialy replaced the aging TeachText with the newer and more versatile SimpleText.
• Utilities: Disk-related utilities (Disk First Aid and HD SC Setup) received a debugging and improvement as well.
