A microcontroller is a microprocessor on a single integrated circuit intended to operate as an embedded system.

Description

Along with its own central processing unit (CPU), a microcontroller typically includes small amounts of RAM and a programmable ROM with timers and I/O ports.

Examples

An early example from the 1980s to 1990s is the Intel 8051 series.[1] Apple developed the Apple T1 and T2 microcontrollers, running bridgeOS to manage hardware subsystems and security on some of its Intel-based Macs in the 2010s.[2]
