Snapchat is a widely-used social media app that is available for iOS and Android. It can also be accessed through a web browser by desktop or laptop computers. Account registration is required for access. In contrast to other social media apps, Snapchat is focused on instant messaging with direct sharing of photos and videos that become inaccessible after a short period of time.

History

The software was conceived by Stanford University students Reggie Brown, Bobby Murphy, and Evan Spiegel. Brown first approached Spiegel with the idea of an app with disappearing messages. Murphy was then recruited to build the first iteration of the app, which was released in July 2011 as Picaboo for iOS. Spiegel and Murphy then founded Snapchat and launched the renamed app in September 2011 without the involvement of Brown, who later settled for a payment of US$157 million. Spiegel, who became the CEO, noted that Snapchat's central feature of self-deleting content made it popular with younger users. By February 2020, the company had 360 million active monthly users and a market valuation of US$20 billion.[1]

Support for iPadOS and desktops

As of 2023, there is not yet a dedicated iPad app of Instagram, though iPadOS 15 and later can properly adapt the iOS version for iPhones into landscape mode.[2] In July 2022, Snapchat for Web was launched for Snapchat+ subscribers.[3]
