Processing is the performing of a predefined sequence of operations on an input to produce an output or change of internal state. This activity typically involves the computer's central processing unit (CPU), though in more modern systems a graphics processing unit (GPU) or other specialized co-processor maybe be involved.[1]
Variations
The term is often qualified:
- Data processing handles digital data.
- Signal processing handles analog data (possibly in digital form, if by a DSP).
- Image processing transforms digital images.
- Word processing takes in typed human language input and produces digital documents.[1]
