YouTube is a video sharing and streaming platform operated by Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google. It provides dedicated apps for iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, and Android; it can also be accessed through a web browser.
YouTube is the 2nd most visited website according to Wikipedia. [1]
History
YouTube was originally founded on February 14, 2005 by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim as an online dating website, though its video content quickly expanded beyond its original target market after the first video was uploaded on April 23, 2005.[2][3] YouTube was one of the first native apps to be made available for the iPhone when it was launched in 2007. The original app icon from iPhone OS 1 to iOS 5 was an old television set. Starting with iOS 6 in September 19, 2012, Google apps such as Google Maps and YouTube were no longer included in iOS by default.[4][5]
Business model
Downloading the YouTube app or accessing the website is free. Some streaming content, such as movies, may require a single "rental fee" or subscription to its "premium" services. Free videos are typically ad-supported and can generate considerable revenue, which is split between Google and content creators.[2] Advertisements and recommendations are targeted towards users by their usage history. Logged-in users can visit their account settings to pause or delete their history.[6] Users without an account can use the privacy settings in iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5, macOS 11.3, tvOS 14.5, or later.[7] As of 2022, there is no watchOS app for YouTube from Google, but WatchTube provides the ability to play back video or audio-only steams from YouTube through a simplified user interface.[8]
